Payment Options for Senior Housing and Residential Care

Because of the wide variations in design, facilities, services and costs of retirement communities and independent living facilities, you should plan to take longer to select this type of housing than you would for a CCRC, assisted living facility or nursing home. You should visit many facilities, learn the details of each one and choose carefully. Source: eldernet.com

What are the major factors that determine the cost of senior housing?
If you have done some reading about senior housing, you know there is a wide range of choices for independent living and for housing with services.  The cost can vary a great deal due to the following:
Location.  The cost of senior housing can parallel that of other housing in the local area.Size of residence.  If you explore independent living, you’ll find the accommodations vary from small one-bedroom units in an apartment complex to large single-family homes in an upscale retirement community.Amenities or services.  Some senior apartments offer little more than a community area for recreation or socializing while some retirement communities may have their own golf course, health club, classes and other organized social activities.  For extra fees, housework, laundry, shopping and transportation may be available.Personal services.  “Assisted living” can be little more than providing communal meals or it could include help with activities of daily living: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting and getting around—custodial care.Medical needs.  For people with chronic illnesses or with significant disabilities, the care of trained professionals may be a necessity, making housing more costly.
How much can I expect to pay for senior housing or residential care?
The cost of senior housing depends a lot on the range of services you want or need.  At the high end are Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) that provide all options from independent living to nursing home care.  Purchasing a living space can cost from $20,000 to way over $100,000 in many areas; then there’s a monthly fee from $1000 to $4000, which is lowest while you function independently and highest if you need nursing home care.
In the mid-range there are the board & care homes which provide communal meals and some personal care.  They go by different names in various places such as “residential care facility” or “personal care home.”  They may be converted single-family houses with 2 to 6 residents, or larger apartment complexes.  As an example of costs, the monthly rates in California range from $850 to $4000.
At the low-cost end, there is some subsidized senior housing--sometimes called congregate housing, HUD housing or Section 8 Housing--where you pay part of the rent and government funding covers the rest.  Your rent is based on the ability to pay—usually a percentage of your income.  Unfortunately, many of these programs have long waiting lists and you must have limited income and assets to qualify.
For most types of senior housing, like housing in general, the prices continue to rise over time.
Can I get financial help to stay in my own home as I get older?
There are some government and community service programs that help reduce expenses so your home continues to be affordable, but many of them are available only to seniors with very limited income and assets.  Some possibilities:
You may be able to get reduced rates on utility bills.  Your local senior center may provide volunteers that help seniors with a range of needs from transportation to gardening. You could have inexpensive meals delivered through “Meals on Wheels”If you need a few visits by a nurse or physical therapist following hospitalization, medical insurance may cover this cost.If you have a terminal illness, medical insurance may pay for hospice care at home.If you have a disability or chronic illness, Medicaid may cover the cost of a limited number of hours per month for someone to assist you with homemaking and personal care.
Sometimes staying in your own home is no longer an option, even though it is your preference.  If you have a progressive disease, a serious disability or severe medical problems, the cost of care at home can exceed institutional care and is often not affordable.
Is financial assistance available for the various types of senior housing?
Some of the price breaks for seniors—help with utility bills, meals and transportation—might still be available to people who move from a private home to a senior housing complex.  Most of these aid programs are based on your having very limited income and assets.  If you owned a home, sold it and put money in the bank, then the increase of your assets could make you ineligible for aid programs you had previously.  However, if you own a modest home, sell it and buy a senior housing unit for a similar price, you’d still qualify for some assistance.  And then there are some types of senior housing that are subsidized directly: part of the rent is paid by government assistance.  For example, there are some board & care homes that accept the senior’s SSI income and return a small monthly allowance to the resident for incidental expenses; and, as noted earlier, there are also some government housing assistance programs, though they often have long waiting lists and serve only seniors with limited income and assets.
What are the sources of funds for housing costs over the long term?
Seniors who are experiencing increasing frailty, illnesses or injuries, have a sometimes confusing array of payment options.  Some funding sources like private health insurance are strictly for medical care.  They do not pay for custodial care such as help with bathing, dressing, grocery shopping or getting around the house.  Other funding sources such as long term care insurance or Medicaid do pay for custodial care costs but no medical care, and often have many limitations and restrictions to the coverage.  The costs of living for seniors needing housing with services can be covered by a combination of the following:
Personal or family money -- assets like stocks and savings, plus income from a job or investments.Pensions and Social Security retirement benefits -- the primary income source for many seniors that can cover rent or mortgage payments.Supplemental Security Income (SSI)--monthly public assistance checks for seniors and the disabled who have very limited income and assets.Reverse mortgage--can be an income source to pay for services to keep a senior in their own home, or to pay for nursing home care of a very ill spouse, or even pay for long-term care insurance.Long-term-care insurance -- sometimes pays only for nursing home care, but some policies cover an array of services in a private home or in an assisted living type of facility.Medicaid (called MediCal in California)--for people who have very limited assets and income, this coverage acts as health insurance for costs of hospitalization, rehab and medicine; also covers some custodial care and long-term care in a nursing home.
Do private health insurance, Medicare and Medigap coverage help with the costs of senior care and housing?
Medicare is government-funded health insurance that covers acute hospital care, services of medical professionals and some allied health professionals such as physical and occupational therapists, for the elderly and the disabled.  Most private health insurance coverage follows Medicare guidelines.  These types of coverage are strictly for medical care, so they don’t help directly with housing costs.  They don’t pay for help with activities of daily living--like eating, bathing and dressing.  Medigap insurance covers some costs that Medicare doesn’t, such as the deductible for hospitalization, but it also excludes coverage for custodial care.
After a hospital stay, Medicare and private health insurance sometimes pay for follow-up care in a nursing home or skilled nursing facility for a limited period of rehabilitation.  However, if there is a need for long-term nursing care, the coverage ends.  Similarly, Medicare-covered home care is for a limited time period and may consist of visits by a Registered Nurse or Physical Therapist only 2 or 3 times a week for an hour or less each time.  Most people with chronic illnesses or progressive diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's often need custodial care but again, Medicare coverage is only for acute hospital care and doctor’s office visits.
Does Medicaid help with the costs of senior care and housing?
Medicaid is a federal medical insurance program administered by the states that provides medical coverage and some assisted living for low-income, low-asset seniors.  Individuals or couples who have had to spend down their savings or other assets due to medical bills eventually qualify for Medicaid.  Eligibility requirements vary from state to state, with a limit on assets as low as $1500 and a limit on income as low as $600 per month.  It is usually possible to retain ownership of a home and a car and still qualify for Medicaid.  It is also possible to qualify if you are over the income limit by paying a monthly deductible called a “share of cost.”  For example, if the income limit is $600 per month and your income is $700, after you spend $100 on medical care costs, Medicaid provides your medical care coverage for the rest of that month.
Medicaid does have some coverage for custodial care, in effect acting as a subsidy for housing-with-services.  Medicaid-covered services in most states can include the following:
custodial care in the home for a limited number of hours per weeksome custodial care in an assisted living facilitythe full cost of long-term care in a nursing home
In addition, some states have combined aid from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with Medicaid funds, to create senior housing-with-services.  The availability of such programs is quite limited.  For guidance on finding this type of program see Congregate Housing.
It is well to remember that Medicaid coverage is quite limited.  If a person with Medicaid needs around-the-clock custodial care, they will probably have to go into a nursing home.  There are also limited choices when it comes to medical care and even nursing home care.  Some doctors and clinics do not accept Medicaid for payment, and some nursing homes have few or no beds designated for Medicaid patients.  While Medicaid does start paying for long-term care after a person has exhausted their income and assets, there are large penalties if you try to hide your assets or quickly transfer assets to children and others.
Can Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provide for senior housing and care?
SSI is a source of income that is administered by the Federal government, and paid for by general tax funds. SSI is for disabled and for people age 65 or older who have little or no other income. People who receive SSI can use the money for food, clothing, and shelter. SSI can help to pay for senior housing, but the amount is not nearly enough to cover rent in many parts of the country, and much less than the cost of skilled nursing care.  Some board & care homes have agreed to charge a special rate allowed by the government to provide custodial care to SSI recipients.  The person who accepts this arrangement gets a small monthly allowance for incidental expenses and the remainder of their SSI goes directly to the board & care home.  People who qualify for SSI due to low income and assets also qualify for Medicaid.  If long term care in a nursing home becomes necessary, it’s the Medicaid that covers the cost.
Can Social Security pay for senior housing and care?
The U.S. government's Social Security program provides retirement income for people who have paid into the program during their income-producing years. In addition, Social Security payments may go to certain people who are disabled, who are the spouse or ex-spouse of a qualified Social Security recipient, or who are survivors of a deceased Social Security recipient. Those who receive Social Security income can use the funds for whatever purposes they wish.  Certainly one of these might be housing.  Social Security benefits can help to pay for senior care and housing, but it is usually not enough to cover a large amount of custodial care, or skilled nursing care.
Does long-term-care insurance pay for senior housing?
This type of insurance was originally designed to cover the cost of long-term care in a nursing home.  With the rise of assisted living as an alternative for seniors who need custodial care but not daily medical care, some insurance companies have greatly expanded this coverage.  Some long-term care policies pay for a variety of custodial care services in private homes and in assisted living facilities.  This type of coverage can be expensive and is not for everyone.  For details, see Long-term-care Insurance for the Elderly and Eeniors.
Does a reverse mortgage help pay for housing or senior care?
For seniors who are homeowners, a reverse mortgage, or home-equity conversion, is one way to pay for housing-with-services.  It is a means of borrowing money from the amount your home is worth beyond any mortgage debt.  There are a variety of lending institutions that provide this, regulated by the federal government.  To qualify for this type of financing, the borrower must be age 62 or older and there must be adequate equity built up.  Sometimes the requirement is that you own your home free and clear. There may be restrictions on how you can use the funds, but they may pay for:
eliminating an existing mortgagelong-term-care insurancehired caregivers to help with housekeeping or provide custodial care servicesnursing home care for a spouse while their partner remains in the home
The conditions of a reverse mortgage require you to repay the loan if you cease to live in the home or, after your death, your heirs must pay back the loan, either through the sale of the house, or with other funds.  Since this way of paying for housing has an effect on your heirs, it can be a complex decision requiring much thought and discussion.

Board and Care Homes for Seniors

Most elderly people find that their needs fall beneath having daily skilled nursing services.  They don't need to be housed in a nursing home.  The small residential care home, licensed for 2 to 6 people provides a safe, comfortable and dignified environment for those who need help intermittently throughout the day and night. What is a Board and Care Home?
A Board and Care Home is a housing facility for seniors or for individuals with disabilities who want or need to be in a group living situation and who may need assistance with personal care and daily living activities.  Typically, a Board and Care facility is selected when 24-hour, non-medical supervision is needed or desired. Board and Care homes were the first widely recognized form of assisted living, and as such, they have been regulated by government agencies; but many Board and Care homes are of the “mom and pop” variety and not licensed.  Thus, if a Board and Care home is under consideration, licensure status should be verified with a county or state licensing office.  Board and Care homes can be a converted single-family home with up to 6 residents or may be a large building similar to an apartment building with over 100 residents.  A characteristic feature of Board and Care is that communal meals are provided, and there is daily contact with staff.  In various parts of the world, you will find many other names for Board and Care Homes such as:
Adult Foster Care Homes Residential Care Facilities Retirement HomesAssisted Living FacilitiesAdult Care Homes Personal Care Operations Sheltered Care Homes Independent Living Facilities Domiciliary Care
An example of varied names for Board and Care comes from the state of Washington where a facility for 6 individuals or less is called an “Adult Family Home” while facilities licensed for between 7 and 150 residents are called “Boarding Homes.”  While many Board and Care Homes are for seniors, some specialize in the care of younger people, or people with special needs.  Depending upon licensing, a Board and Care Home might serve only elderly, or people with disabilities or chronic psychiatric problems, or Alzheimer’s patients.
How is a Board and Care Home different from Assisted Living Facilities or a Nursing Home?
With the proliferation of housing-with-services in recent decades, many types of assisted living facilities have opened, providing a wide range of services.  So long as a person does not need daily services of medical professionals, an assisted living facility may be available that helps with most every aspect of personal care such as dressing, grooming, eating, toileting and getting around.  In the days when most seniors had to go to a nursing home if they needed such comprehensive custodial care, the Board and Care homes provided minimal assistance.  The larger facilities were often called “retirement homes,” and required that the senior be capable of getting to the dining hall for meals, and be independent in most activities.  The staff might monitor the resident’s medications to be sure they were taken on time in the right dosages.  Housekeeping and laundry were commonly provided by the staff.  The typical large Board and Care home offered little else in the way of personal assistance.  The smaller 2-6 bed facilities often did a lot more for the residents, such as assistance with dressing, toileting and getting around.  Many of these had special licenses qualifying them to perform those extra personal services.
Nowadays, even though Board and Care is just one type of assisted living, it is a very important type.  Because of their history, Board and Care facilities are subject to state licensing laws, so can be held to recognized standards of care, and if there are problems such as inadequate care, the facility can be reported to the government body that regulates it.  In addition, government funding sometimes can cover the cost of living in a Board and Care, for people receiving public assistance payments (SSI).  For details, see Payment Options for Senior Housing and Residential Care.
It’s important to remember that “mom and pop” Board and Cares, and other types of assisted living facilities, are not always closely regulated.  Because of this, standards of care are not uniform, and services vary greatly from one facility to the next.  If you are looking for an assisted living arrangement, it’s important to ask about each facility’s certifications and licenses, then check their validity.  A government-backed licensing program is likely to be more specific in standards of care than a commercial company who does certification.  Even with licensing, though, government agencies may only infrequently monitor facilities, so it’s important to drop in unannounced to confirm that conditions are safe and sanitary, that promised services are being provided, and that no elder abuse or neglect is occurring.
A Board and Care Home differs from a Nursing Home in that it has very limited, if any, onsite medical care.  A Nursing Home is for people who require daily supervision and care provided by medical professionals such as registered nurses and certified nurse assistants, under the supervision of licensed physicians.
Good candidates for Board and Care Home
Board and Care Homes can serve the needs of a variety of senior citizens:
Seniors who are becoming frail, and find the responsibilities of homemaking an increasing burden, or too difficult to do consistently.Seniors with chronic illnesses who need daily assistance with cooking, cleaning, and monitoring medications.Seniors with very limited income and assets who are having difficulty paying for rent, food and household expenses can have a room and meals paid by public assistance--their SSI benefits.
The staff at a Board and Care Home encourages residents to be as independent as they can safely be, making as many choices as possible about their daily lives and health care.
Living arrangements in a Board and Care Home
Residents of a Board and Care Home have a private or shared room and may have private or shared bathrooms.  The rooms usually do not include a kitchen, since providing meals is a major function of the facility.  Facilities generally have some common areas for socializing which include a dining area and one or more other rooms that are mainly for informal contact.
The larger facilities will often have other rooms that might be used for classes, concerts, lectures, films, games, or exercise programs.  Sometimes outdoor areas are also available with some amenities such as swimming pool, shuffleboard or Jacuzzi.
Services provided in Board and Care Homes
A Board and Care Home provides the following services:
A basic room for sleeping that might include a desk, chair with reading lamp, or TV.  (For low-cost units the room may be shared.) Meals Help with daily activities, such as money management and setting up health care and other appointments Custodial help: reminding, laundry, housekeeping, transportation Reminders to take medications Daily contact with staff (supervision)
Additional services that a Board and Care may provide (depending upon the facility’s specialty and licensing):
Assisted living, such as bathing or grooming Dispensing of medications Social, recreational, and spiritual activities
Cost of a Board and Care Home
A Board and Care Home can cost from $350 to $3500 per month, depending on its location, the size of the living space, the amount of privacy, and the amenities provided.
Finding an appropriate facility
The References section below has examples of several ways to locate facilities primarily through government agencies or non-profit organizations.  There are also private housing and care referral and placement services that can help older adults and families find a facility that is a “ best fit”.  Recommendations are based on information about the seniors’ physical, mental and cognitive condition, their financial situation, location and other personal preferences.  Fees for this type of service are generally paid by the facilities so some checking is recommended, such as asking for references.

Mickey Hart Debuts "Rhythms of the Universe" Project in Mexico

January 11, 2010 – Playa Del Carmen, Mexico – Grateful Dead percussionist and Grammy Award winner Mickey Hart will bring his “Rhythms Of The Universe” presentation to Nobel Prize winning physicist George F. Smoot’s upcoming conference, which is hosted by the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics and Instituto Avanzado de Cosmologia. The conference, entitled “CONGRESO COSMOLOGIA EN LA PLAYA, Essential Cosmology for the Next Generation,” takes place in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, from January 11th through 15th, 2010, and draws cosmologists and astrophysicists from around the world.
Have you ever wondered what the planets, the stars and the universe might sound like? While working individually on very different careers, Mickey Hart and George Smoot have been wondering the same question for years. Their mutual curiosity eventually brought them together in exploring this fascinating question.
George Smoot, Nobel Prize-winning physicist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, used scientific measurements to demonstrate the “Big Bang” theory in 2006. Mickey Hart is the Grammy Award-winning percussionist for the popular American rock band The Grateful Dead. Hart has been working on converting light and electromagnetic waves collected throughout the universe into music that leads back to the sound of the “Big Bang,” the singular event 13.7 billion years ago that blew us into creation. Hart, well prepared for this long, strange trip in search of sounds says, “I knew sooner or later I would have to hear and play with the sound of the ‘Big Bang,’ beat one, the beginning of time and space...this is where we came from."
While preparing for a concert tour with The Dead in spring 2009, Hart started incorporating sounds from space into the popular “Drums and Space” segment, a percussion-heavy experimental jam session which usually takes place during the second set of Dead concerts. After the tour, Hart returned to the Bay Area and connected with Dr. Smoot at his Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics/University of California, Berkeley. The pair began discussing Hart’s project that focused on “musically playing with the fabric of the universe.” This was a coming together of science and art. These two pioneers in their respective fields are hoping that the results of their musical and scientific mission will inspire a greater appreciation and understanding of science through art.
Hart has written four books; two of them (“Drumming at the Edge of Magic” and “Planet Drum”) introduce the subject of the primal rhythmic experience of the “Big Bang.” Dr. Smoot, a fan of the Grateful Dead, discovered the essence of the “Big Bang,” the beginning of time and space. Now, the two have come together, along with Meyer Sound Labs, to tell this amazing story using the latest techniques in sound. They will present their findings at the conference in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, on January 13th, 2010.
Mickey would like to thank Elizabeth Cohen, Ph.D and Cohen Acoustical for their contributions to this project.

Life In Prison by Merle Haggard and The Byrds (Sweetheart of the Rodeo)-lyrics

The jury found the verdict first degree
They swore I planned her death to be
I prayed they'd sentence me to die
But they wanted me to live and I know why
So I'd do life in prison for the wrongs I've done
And I pray every night for death to come
My life will be a burden every day
If I could die, my pain might go away
With trembling hands I killed my darling wife
Because I loved her more than life
My love for her will last a long, long time
But I'd rather die than live to lose my mind
And I'll do life in prison for the wrongs I've done
And I pray every night for death to come
My life will be a burden every day
If I could die, my pain might go away
If I could die, my pain might go away

Songs I Wrote While A Jesus Freak At Lighthouse Temple In The '70's

         EASTER SONG

Look up there on Calvary
Lovely Jesus nailed to a tree
They cut his side
They pierced his hands
His holy blood
Runs on the sands

It goes to the chords of  "Codeine" by David Freiberg from the Jefferson Starship when he sang it in the Quicksilver Messenger Service. I forget the rest right now because I have a learning disablity, bad memory, possibly Alzheimer's. I'll remember the rest soon.

IDIOT WIND- Bob Dylan
Am B E
Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press
Am B E
Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out but when they will I can only guess
C#m G#m F#m E
They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy
C#m G#m F#m E
She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me
G#m A
I can't help it if I'm lucky
People see me all the time and they just can't remember how to act
Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts
Even you, yesterday you had to ask me where it was at
I couldn't believe after all these years
You didn't know me better than that, sweet lady
CHORUS #1:
E A E
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth
A B
Blowing down the backroads headin' south
E A E
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth
A B E
You're an idiot babe, it's a wonder that you still know how to breathe
I ran into the fortune teller, who said beware of lightning that might
strike
I haven't known peace and quiet for so long I can't remember what it's
like There's a lone soldier on the cross, smoke pourin' out of a boxcar door
You didn't know it, you didn't think it could be done
In the final end he won the war after losin' every battle
I woke up on the roadside, daydreamin' 'bout the way things sometimes are
Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are makin' me see
stars You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with
lies
One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzin' around your eyes
Blood on your saddle
CHORUS #2:
Idiot wind, blowing through the flowers on your tomb
Blowing through the curtains in your room
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot, babe, it's a wonder that you still know how to breathe
It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart
You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn't enough to change my
heart
Now everything's a little upside down
As a matter of fact the wheels have stopped
What's good is bad, what's bad is good
You'll find out when you reach the top, you're on the bottom
I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind
I can't remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed
Your eyes don't look into mine
The priest wore black on the seventh day
And sat stone faced while the building burned
I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees
While the springtime turned slowly into autumn
CHORUS #3:
Idiot wind, blowing like a circle around my skull
From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot, babe, it's a wonder that you still know how to breathe
I can't feel you anymore, I can't even touch the books you've read
Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishin' I was somebody else
instead Down the highway, down the tracks, down the road to ecstasy
I followed you beneath the stars, hounded by your memory
And all your ragin' glory
I been double crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free
I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline
Which separated you from me
You'll never know the hurt I suffered nor the pain I rise above
And I'll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love
And it makes me feel so sorry
CHORUS #4:
Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats
Blowing through the letters that we wrote
Idiot wind, blowing through the dust upon our shelves
We're idiots, babe, it's a wonder we can even feed ourselves
(from Blood On the Tracks, 1974)
Enjoy!

3am

It's 3am Sat. They've been waking me up in the middle of the night for at least the last week and I feel like I haven't slept for a week. I always fall asleep during the day, like in class. I think there's an election next week. They did it a lot before last. Nov.'s election, and before that it got me disqualified with $20K/yr. financial aid. I had the police come many times, but they're on their side. Obama won anyway.

While my dad was dying I got financial aid from Cal State East Bay in Hayward to be a senior computer science major going for a B.S.C.S. They want me to go for a Masters and I'm considering law schools; my sister graduated from Boalt Hall at UCB here. When I was at Yale I liked to hang out at the Sterling Yale School of Law with the law students, but you have to get good grades to be accepted to those. I'm also an IT Assistant ata the SEVA Foundation.

"It's not so bad," said primary care physician Dr. Edward Riceberg from Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills. "Worse things could happen," said psychiatrist Dr. Lisa Fine from Edelman Center, Los Angeles County Mental Health Department. She also said, "Risperdal has been linked to diabetes." She had unknowingly prescribed me Risperdal when I saw her for five years at my family's request. It was first prescribed for me by psychiatrist Dr. Antonio Perelli-Minetti in Bakersfield, when it first came out. My mother insisted I see him every two weeks while I was a computer science major at Cal State Bakersfield because I have an old psych misdiagnosis of "paranoid schizophrenia" from 1971 to get me out of the draft. I need to go to a clinical psychologist and get retested and rediagnosed, according to clinical psychologist friend Mike Bernath. UCSF-Mt. Zion Professor of Psychiatry
Dr. Richard Shadoan, who I have seen since 1985 agrees and said, "Maybe you have depression," and I said, "I've never been depressed a day in my life, " and he said, "Anxiety," and I said, "No." I said, "I want to be diagnosed sane, OK, healthy, well, and with a clean bill of health." I don't really know; I'm guessing it's hard to send that category to the health insurance companies; apparently you need a clinical psychologist.

Dr. Perelli-Minetti is a wonderful, nice man, and had no idea of the side effects of atypical anti-psychotics like Zyprexa, Risperdal, and Seroquel. My ex, actress Laurie Senit, has diabetes we think from Seroquel for schizophrenia. She has a B.A. in psychology from UCLA; she just had a nervous breakdown while she was getting straight A's in her first year of M.F.T psychology grad school at Pepperdine University because someone broke into her apartment near UCLA and stole her TV and she had a nervous breakdown, quit school, and she's never really recovered, according to her mother. We both got really fat on that #####, as well as our girl blimp K-12 schoolteacher friend, Debbie Behar, with manic depression.

Dr. Fine is also a wonderful, beautiful, caring person (as I think are almost all doctors and medics) and neither she nor any of their psychiatric community had any idea that atypical anti-psychotics would have any side effects and be linked to diabetes. I know the Zyprexa diabetes patients won a multi-million dollar class action suit against Eli Lilly (I don't know about the Risperdal diabetes patient class action lawsuit against Johnson and Johnson). Everybody tries to do the best they can at their job; it isn't anybody's fault. They didn't know; nobody knew. Dr. Fine took me off all my psych meds and said, "When you go to Cal State, don't come back," and, when we met with my sister, Joan: "If you get the money you can do anything you want."

I went to endocrinologist Dr. Hohnichter on Rexford St. in Beverly Hills with my Anthem Blue Cross PPO. I have a mild case, just treated with diet, no insulin, it may resolve and go away, if I keep my blood glucose under 110 and eat healthy I'll live a normal life.

Girls in Tech is a social network enterprise focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of like-minded, professional, intelligent and influential women in technology. As young women with the capacity to inspire, we made it our personal desire and passion to create and sustain an organization that focuses on the collaboration, promotion, growth and success of women in the technology sector.

Created in February of 2007, ‘Girls in Tech’ (GIT) was founded by Adriana Gascoigne. GIT and was born out of a need to provide a place for women to cultivate ideas around their careers and business concepts involving technology.

Girls in Tech aims to offer a variety of resources and tools for women to supplement and further enhance their professional careers and aspirations in technology. Some of these resources include, educational workshops and lectures, networking functions, round table discussions, conferences, social engagements, and recruitment events.
